More than 37 years ago, four Nashville young women had a vision of sharing their love and experience of sewing with others across the country. This vision became Children's Corner Patterns. In the 1970s, there were not many options readily available for sewing patterns for children, especially heirloom-inspired pieces. Much of the sewing in the southern region of the United States traces its roots to a few early teachers who developed the classic patterns we know and love today.
One of these influential pattern designers, Elizabeth Travis Johnson, taught classes and inspired many women in Nashville in the 1970's as she taught at the Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. With the support and knowledge of Ms. Johnson, the founders of Children's Corner set out to translate her incredible classic styles and techniques to home sewers. Children's Corner Patterns soon became the gold standard of children's heirloom sewing patterns. Having been involved since the beginning, Lezette Thomason and Ginger Caldwell, faithfully poured tireless energy, passion and commitment into producing more than 250 patterns over a period of 40 years.
The Smiles Behind the Patterns
As we attempt to "fill the heels" of the incredible women before us, we feel connected in that we share the same goals of producing classic and timeless garments for children. With small children of our own, we are surrounded by inspiration every day. We love translating the classic style in our modern world.
We came to love Children's Corner Patterns through our sewing adventures with our own children. Gratefully, we took advantage of the jewel in our backyard. As Nashvillians, we attended many classes at the Children's Corner retail store. We saw how well Children's Corner Patterns are suited to teach and educate sewers at many levels of expertise. We developed a quick appreciation for the ease and simplicity of the instructions along with the fact Children's Corner Patterns are printed on tissue - which means no tracing!
We are keenly aware that instruction in a classroom setting is not available for everyone. We love that as a printed pattern company, we can enter your homes. We can help you learn a new skill, and most importantly help you dress the beautiful little inspirations that are all around you.
Looking to the Future
We are honored to steward Children's Corner Patterns for generations to come. In doing so, we are committed to:
- classic timeless designs
- individually printed pattern pieces on tissue
- simple, clear and educational instructions
- interchangeable pattern pieces and a good fit
- inspiration on how to personalize your project
As we look toward the future, we do so with the grounding in the past. Our new patterns will balance timeless classics with an eye for modern trends. We love seeing children dressed as children, and will strive to equip you to achieve this as well. Our journey this far has taught us that sewing is much more than a hobby, it's a culture.
